Genomics England drives Sickle Cell research through the Diverse Data Initiative

In black communities, more research is needed to improve our understanding of health conditions and to develop better treatments.

The IBHO BioResource is a collaboration between NIHR BioResource, NIHR Maudsley BioResource Centre hosted at King's College London, and Genomics England. The NIHR BioResource and NIHR Maudsley BioResource Centre are funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Genomics England is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)

What is the IBHO BioResource?

The project focuses on health conditions affecting black communities. The aim is :

  • Explore genetic and environmental risk factors for common and rare health conditions affecting the black communites
  • Create a re-contactable group of volunteers willing to participate in future relevant health research
  • Recruit >10,000 people from UK black communities to enable research that improves health outcomes for black communities.

What is it?

The IBHO BioResource is a new research initiative dedicated to studying health conditions that affect people from black communities in the UK. The project is part of the NIHR BioResource, a re-contactable resource that connects health research volunteers to a wide range of research studies.

Volunteers with and without health conditions are being invited to participate but need to match the following criteria:

  • From black communities
  • Live in England
  • We are also inviting Sickle Cell patients from any ethnic background to join the IBHO BioResource

What will I have to do?

  • Read the participant information sheet
  • Once you are happy with the information, sign the consent form
  • Provide a saliva or blood sample
  • Fill out a health and lifestyle questionnaire. This helps researchers better understand how genetics and lifestyle affects health
  • be open to receive invitations to take part in further research studies. You are free to decline when invited
