Managing Nutrition in Sickle Cell Disorder
Dr Claudine Matthews has developed this online course:
- To improve sickle cell patients' access to evidence-based nutrition and diet education tailored to their unique nutritional needs, risks and challenges
- To provide sickle cell patients with tailored nutrition knowledge and practical tips to identify, better manage and optimise their nutritional health and wellbeing
- To educate and empower sickle cell patients through nutrition education and training to improve their nutrition knowledge and quality of life outcomes
Dr Claudine Matthews is an award winning Consultant Dietitian for Health and Social Care and is a driving force for the incorporation of nutrition into general healthcare management for individuals with haemoglobinopathies. Dr Matthews was awarded the Dame Barbara Clayton Award 2024 for her innovating work developing dietetic policy and practice in sickle cell nutrition and has over 20 years of experience working as a dietitian in the UK, in an array of conditions. As founder of Sickle Cell Nutrition Academy (SCNA) a pioneering non-profit organisation, her sole purpose is to help people living with sickle cell disorder to improve their quality of life.
Note: this course is a series of workshops and full benefit to participants will come from attending all 4 sessions. Each workshop's duration is 1.5hrs, with a total of 4 workshops all being held on Wednesday evenings at 7.00 pm-8.30 pm

- Clinical features of SCD
- Multiple organ and systems Involvement (Disability, QOL, Health and wellbeing)
- Main complications (signs and symptoms) of SCD
- Nutritional Implications linked to SCD
- Nutritional problems (needs, risks, challenges) – over the life course
